August 31, 2006 I have completed the forest health and fire risk survey for the Sterling Pointe subdivision during August, 2006. While there are currently no infestations of highly damaging agents in the area, the forest in and around Sterling Pointe appears to be highly stressed and susceptible to possible attacks from bark beetles. Fire risk is also high for many homes in the area and will require the creation of defensible spaces and general fuel reduction on much of the Sterling Pointe subdivision. Several landowners are obviously actively managing their lots and removing understory vegetation; however, the majority of forested properties have a high risk for fire, insect attacks, and disease. The dwarf mistletoe infestation located in the southeastern part of the subdivision will require a collaborative effort by landowners to reduce the spread and severity of the infestation. I have included lists of the damaging agents that were found on ponderosa pine in the area as well as management recommendations. Enclosed you will also find maps of the areas of concern; however, those that I created have only approximate locations and do not show current roads. There is a copy of a map you provided to me with more specific information showing lots and addresses. Please remind private landowners to read through the following information and monitor their trees closely for signs of new infestations by insects or diseases. If you have any questions you may call our office at (303) 660-9625.
